FIESTA DE LOS PATIOS
The Festival of Patios is the name given to the popular contest, held during the first two weeks of May, in which many patios of the Historic Center of the city participate. The objective is to show the beauty of each patio, as well as the expertise of their owners to decorate it. There are many people who, year after year, altruistically open their homes so that thousands of people from Córdoba and tourists can enjoy their floral decorations.
Carnations, gitanillas, geraniums…and many more flowers, creates authentic works of art in the different competing patios. Some of them stand out for their number of pots (some exceed a thousand), others for their beautiful flower beds and fountains, others for the sympathy of their owners, to whom we must be grateful for so much effort.
There are numerous categories and awards. The most famous is the one referring to “old architecture”, because this is where the oldest patios compete, but more and more modern patios are trying to make a place for themselves. We can not forget the award for “grilles and balconies”, which delight all passers-by.
Many people wonder when is the best time to visit the Patios of Córdoba. The best date is, obviously, when the popular contest is taking place, during the first two weeks of May. However, this statement should be qualified.
Why is the best date? Because the owners prepare the flowers so that they are in perfect condition for the contest. In addition, we will find more than 70 patios open, which gives us a multitude of options…Can you imagine visiting them all? You’d better not try, you’ll end up exhausted. On the other hand, there are times when there is some overcrowding. especially on competition weekends. This can lead to a certain amount of overcrowding, especially for the elderly.
But, is it possible to visit the Patios of Córdoba outside the competition? Pues sí, durante los últimos años, varios propietarios se han asociado, y han decido poner en valor la Fiesta de los Patios más allá del concurso.
